Bridging the Gap

Here are stories from Aboriginal people that we have met across Australia, from Broom to Sydney and Adelaide to Darwin.

Unfinished Business - 2/9/13

"Unfinished Business" which tells the stories of 30 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with disabilities.

Each story is complex and is intertwined with Australia's political and social history, which has resulted in unacceptably high rates of disability in Indigenous communities. The project seeks to challenge existing prejudices and misconceptions about indigenous persons living with disability and draw attention to critical issues: racism, fetal alcohol syndrome, black diggers, stolen generation, limited access to services and the impacts of asbestos mining and atomic testing. Participants live with a wide range of disability experiences - acquired, congenital, sensory, psychological, intellectual, visible and invisible. A consultative and respectful approach throughout has ensured that participants' dignity is upheld.

Our Town Aurukun - 17/4/2012

We travelled to Aurukun, a remote Aboriginal community in Far North Queensland, to teach film making to young Indiginous adults. We called the project BLACK ON BLACK because our goal is to enpower Aboriginal people in remote communities to record their own stories. We taught them how to use the camera, filming techniques and how to use iMovie to do editing. Curtis Yunkaporta, John Blowhard, Rhianna Poonkamelya and Zarnhi Hudson made seven short films together.

The music was made by the Elder Stanly Kalkeeyorta, especially for this project and we thank him so much for this.

We would all like to thank you to Aurukun Local Program Office, PFDS PHaM's and the QLD Dept of Communities for their support.
